Amalfi Coast 5 day itinerary

The Amalfi Coast of Italy has something for everyone – from delicious pasta, pizza, and gelato for foodies, the ruins of Pompeii for history buffs, the luxury island of Capri for geography lovers and of course, the beaches and shops of Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi if you just want a total chill out.

I based myself in Sorrento for a 5 day break at the end of March, which was the perfect amount of time to explore the area at an unhurried pace. March is actually a great time to go, as it’s much less crowded and cooler, too!

You can find my Amalfi Coast 5 day itinerary below! (If you’re staying in the region for three or six days, you can find my alternative recommendations below).

(For full disclosure, if you click and make a purchase through some of the adverts on this page I may earn a small commission. This doesn’t come at any additional cost to you. Many thanks for your support, I really appreciate it!)

Day 1: Arrive in Sorrento

Walk around Sorrento to get your bearings. Have some delicious ice cream and explore the town, including the shops down all the side-streets. Enjoy the view of Vesuvius from Piazza della Vittoria.

You can find out more about what to do in Sorrento here.

Day 2: Capri

Get an early morning ferry to the island of Capri. Take a 2 hour boat trip around the island and visit the Blue Grotto if it’s open (it was!) Take the bus to Anacapri and then get the chairlift up Monte Solaro. Afterwards, visit Ville San Michele to admire the views of the island and explore Anacapri briefly before taking the bus back to the harbour. You can read about my day trip to Capri here.

Day 3: Pompeii

Take the train to Pompeii; take a 2 hour guided tour around the ancient city and then take some time to explore solo. Visit the museum before heading back.

Day 4: Positano and Amalfi

Take an organised trip to Positano and Amalfi, two coastal towns close-ish to Sorrento. Have two hours each in Positano and Amalfi, visiting Museo della Carta (Traditional Paper Museum) in the latter.

For more information about visiting Positano you can read my blog post here; and for more information about visiting Amalfi you can read my blog post here.

Day 5: Head back to Naples airport for the flight home

Take the Curreri Viaggi bus from Sorrento railway station back to Naples Airport.

Some alternatives:

If you’re staying in the Amalfi Coast region for three days

Skip Amalfi and Positano, and stick with Sorrento, Capri, and Pompeii (or Herculaneum if you prefer).

If you’re staying in the Amalfi Coast region for six days

If you have an extra day, you may want to hike Vesuvius (which is a lot more gentle than it sounds) and/or visit Herculaneum, which is smaller than Pompeii but has different things you can see (due to how the eruption affected each location).
