Two hours in Positano, Italy

Along the Amalfi Drive is Positano, a pretty village quite literally built into the cliffs. Although there’s not a whole lot to do in Positano compared to say, Amalfi or Sorrento, it’s a lovely place to wander for a few hours.

I went on the Amalfi Coast Last Minute tour run by Tempio Travel, who have an office at Sorrento railway station. (This post isn’t sponsored by them, by the way!) I got to spend two hours in both Positano and Amalfi, and it was great to explore a bit more of the region from the comfort of a private vehicle.

(For full disclosure, if you click and make a purchase through some of the adverts on this page I may earn a small commission. This doesn’t come at any additional cost to you. Many thanks for your support, I really appreciate it!)

Pro Tip: if you’re staying in Positano

If you’re staying in Positano, take a look to see what the topography is like near your hotel. As the village is built onto the contours of the cliffs, you might end up climbing some steep paths to get to your room if you’re not careful!

Wander round Positano and do some shopping

Positano is beautiful to walk around! When I visited in March the hydrangeas were out, and there’s a section of path covered by wisteria vines. There are plenty of shops along the pathways selling beautiful pottery, clothing, bags and sandals.

As the Amalfi Coast is a luxury destination be prepared for high prices (some of the clothing I saw was gorgeous but well out of my price range!) There are some stores that sell cheaper touristy items though.

Visit Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta for some stunning architecture

Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta features a majolica-tiled dome and a 13th-century Byzantine icon of the Virgin Mary. I only popped in briefly, but the white and gold interior was stunning. Just outside the cathedral there’s a mini courtyard with some mosaic artwork and a viewpoint out to sea.

If, like me, you were wondering what majolica tiles are, these are brightly coloured glazed tiles – great for Instagram! (Although I couldn’t get a proper photo you can see the green and yellow dome in the bottom-right of the photo below. It goes without saying that the real thing is infinitely better!)

Enjoy the beach

Positano has a medium-sized sandy beach, perfect for relaxing! From the beach there are of course gorgeous views of the sea, but also amazing views of the pastel buildings above.

Enjoy a lemon sorbet…in a lemon

Although they’re not cheap I just had to treat myself to this lemon sorbet served in er, a lemon. I got this from the Collina bakery and it was absolutely delicious! You can also find these in Amalfi.

Walk the Path of the Gods

Unfortunately I didn’t have time to do this, but if you have more than a few hours to spare you can walk the Path of the Gods. It’s a 1-2 hour hike that runs along the cliffs from Nocelle, which is not too far from Positano, to the town of Agerola. If you don’t fancy walking there and back there are buses which can transport you at either end.
